About

Your author and his wife on vacation somewhere in the countryside on the East coast of the U.S.

I started this blog in September of 2010 while preparing for a 93km ultramarathon held in January of 2011, a race in which I ultimately DNF’d.

Having taken some lessons from that race I am plotting my way towards finishing the Al Andalus Ultra Trail, a 220km 5 day stage race held in the heat of summer in the south of Spain.

While I have an athletic background I more or less futzed around athletically for 10 years after finishing Ironman Canada in 2001 (12:50, walked the marathon). Having other priorities in my life now1 I felt it was time to get things together and be serious about fitness. And from that was born my idea to build a huge aerobic base by ultra running for a couple of years (2011 – 2013).

Enough about you Mike, what’s in it for me?

I plan on writing about how to go from being a rookie ultra runner to being a competent distance runner. For me that means fighting for my age group. Along the way I am going to:

  1. Train to burn fat
  2. Learn how to prepare a proper Annual Training Plan (ATP)
  3. Learn how to train to be fast2

Those are the main goals for now. More will come, I’m sure. So stay tuned, and subscribe to the blog (see the form in the sidebar) if you are interested!

Thanks for reading!
Mike

  1. Wife, child, business
  2. Serious fast people will notice that the two year period I give myself earlier is not enough time to get properly fast.
